Every one of you will no doubt utter with confidence that it is Alexander Graham Bell, and the telephone was introduced to the world in the year 1875 by Mr. Graham Bell.
Mr. Graham Bell was also a very smart man and he took the pains to get his unique discovery of telephone machine patented with the appropriate authorities in the U.S., precisely on March 7, 1876. Graham Bell, after three days of patenting his discovery, precisely on March 10, 1876, transmitted the first message ever sent by the telephone.
The discovery and patent have confirmed that Graham Bell is the inventor of Telephone and officially, telephone came into existence since March 10, 1876.
Is Graham Bell the original inventor of the Telephone? He does have the patent in his name, and by virtue of that patent, nobody can take away the credit from this great man.
But, historical records reveal that, much before Graham Bell introduced this device to the world in 1875, this machine was invented.
To be precise, an Italian American named Antonio Meucci has engaged himself in the innovative work of transmitting speech through the means of electricity as early as 1857. In the year, 1871, Mr. Meucci had applied for patenting his invention with the authorities. But, unfortunately, Mr. Meucci could not find enough patronage or supporters for his unique invention, and as such, could not afford to pay the $250 required for getting the patent for the discovery.
Four years before Graham Bell introduced the Telephone to the world, Antonio Meucci had similar one invented and applied for patent. But, lack of support and money for patent deprived Meucci of the fame.
A legal battle between Meucci and Graham Bell with regard to the discovered finally concluded that Graham Bell owns the right and patent for discovering Telephone and the invention does stand in the name of Alexander Graham Bell. However, the interesting point worth noting is that the jury, at the time of awarding the case to Graham Bell, did acknowledge that Meucci was the first person to have speech mechanically by means of a wire telephone. This, in itself, is a moral victory for the unsung Hero – Antonio Meucci.
